Superga Hill in Turin, will the 2022 Giro d'Italia be decided here?

Superga Hill, this mountain will not immediately conjure up a nice cycling memory. That will change in 2022. In the 2022 Giro, this mountain on the edge of Turin, the capital of Piemont, will be climbed no less than three times. Time for an introduction.

Initially, the climb is quite gentle. The first five hundred metres rise with an average of seven percent. After that, the steepness increases steadily. Peaks of up to fourteen percent are not uncommon. The first section with varying steepness is the template for the entire climb. Steep – flat – steep – flat. Halfway up the climb, the steepest section is located with a maximum of fourteen percent. A few hairpin bends and shady spots characterize the climb. Only once does the Basilica open up for a wide view of the city of Turin.

Almost at the top at about 600 meters you can ride straight ahead like the cyclists during the semi-classic Milano-Torino. They climb the Basilica twice during this classic. At the top of the hill it offers a beautiful view of the 300 year old basilica of the Superga and the world city of Torino. Absolutely recommended!

AC Torino plane crash

The hill was part of one of the worst football disasters in Italian history in 1949. On May 4, 1949, a plane crashed on the hill in thick fog and heavy rain. Players, coaches and supervisors of the football club AC Torino were on board. All 31 people on board were killed, including almost the entire AC Torino team.

At the end of the forties, AC Torino had become one of the best clubs in Italy. The national team consisted mainly of players from AC Torino. Of the starting eleven, only the goalkeeper did not play for the club from Turin. The team of Grande Torino became national champions four years in a row. The club played the competition with youth players. Out of respect, the opponents also fielded their youth team against Grande Torino. A memorial stone on the hill commemorates this disaster.
